Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Competition

Heavy Vehicle Mechanics work with trucks, buses, tractors, stationary engines, agricultural machinery, bulldozers and other earthmoving equipment. They specialise in the repair, maintenance and testing of the mechanical components in this type of machinery.

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION

The WorldSkills Australia Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.

WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

Regional Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The 2022 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition for Heavy Vehicle Mechanics aligns to the Units of Competency in the AUR31120 – Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology Qualification.

Regional Tasks

The Regional Competition consists of six modules. The modules have been designed to represent typical everyday tasks that a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic could encounter in a general workshop or field service environment. The project covers:

  • Hydraulic Service
  • Electronic Diesel Engine Management

National Tasks

The National Competition has been designed to represent typical everyday tasks that a Plant and Transport Mechanic could encounter in a general workshop or field service environment. The competition project is designed to test the Competitors skills in the following areas related to Automotive Mechanics:

  • Diagnosis
  • Repair in accordance with manufacturers procedures
  • Adjustment
  • Measurement and recording
  • Trade skills
  • Report sheet
  • Installation
  • Cleanliness and observations of WHS requirements

Nationals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 15 hours over 3 days not including briefing or breaks.
